I Will Not Pick Up My Cell Phone Today When I’m Feeling Anxious

Nor grab something to eat — that’s my exercise for today. Wish me luck. Even better — won’t you join me?

I can handle feeling anxiety.

I can handle feeling anxiety.

I can handle feeling anxiety.

Of course, I can.

What’s it going to do — kill me?

Or drive me to do physical harm to myself?

I highly doubt that.

Then why do I reach for the phone 98% of the time when I have an anxious thought?

Or run to the refrigerator door even though I’m not remotely hungry?

The best answer I can come up with is force of habit.

The second best answer that popped into my head is that it’s easier and I prefer comfort in the moment to discomfort in the moment.

That wouldn’t be so bad if it was just on an occasional basis. After all, I’m only human. Emotions can be challenging to process.

Note to self: They are not THAT challenging.

That’s no more than a story I’ve told myself for most of my life.
